Arrival by train

The Ennstalbahn runs between Linz and Weißenbach-St. Gallen. Depending on the time of day and day of the week, the trains run at one to two-hour intervals. Train stations are located in Ternberg, Trattenbach, Losenstein, Reichraming, at Großraming power station (stop for the Ennstal visitors’ center), Großraming, Küpfern, Kastenreith, Kleinreifling, and Weißenbach-St. Gallen. The stopping-trains traveling from/to St. Valentin as well as the regional trains traveling from/to Linz, aside from a few exceptions in Küpfern and the Großraming power station, serve all train stations of the Ennstalbahn relevant to the national park. Stopping trains provide connection in St. Valentin to the intercity trains running on the express line between Vienna and Salzburg. From the Großraming train station, the No. 448 bus runs several times a day to the village of Brunnbach, an important starting point for hikes into the national park, also the site of the Brunnbachschule education center.  The Steyrtal is accessible by the No. 452 (Rohr-Bad Hall-Steinbach an der Steyr) and 433 (Steyr-Molln-Kirchdorf) buses. The timetables vary from hourly connections in the morning and later in the afternoon to longer intervals in the midmorning and weekend.  On the southwestern edge of Kalkalpen National Park is the Pyhrnbahn line. It leads from Linz to Selzthal and constitutes a significant north-south axis. Important train stations for the national park visitor are in Klaus, Hinterstoder (St. Pankraz), Roßleithen, and Windischgarsten. With only a few exceptions, stopping-trains run hourly between Linz and Spital am Pyhrn or Selzthal. In addition, these frequent stopping trains are supplemented by four intercity connections between Graz and Linz with a stop in Windischgarsten.  At the Windischgarsten train station, the No. 435 bus runs to Rosenau am Hengstpaß. It runs several times a day in both directions. In the summer season (1.5. to 26.10.), a bus will take you by appointment as far as the Hengstpaßhöhe on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays twice a day, call the Rebhandl company, Tel. 07562/5339.  Other regional bus lines from Liezen to Windischgarsten (No. 911), from Kirchdorf an der Krems to Windischgarsten (No. 430), and from Hinterstoder to Windischgarsten (No. 431) complete the transportation options in the Windischgarsten area and partially function as shuttle and pick-up service to/from the trains on the Pyhrnbahn line.  For rides within the  Upper Austria transportation system, their listed fares with discounts for children, youth, families, seniors, people with disabilities, etc. apply.  (link zu ÖBB) Schedules for Austrian Federal Railways
